Selling Ponies

ERISKAYS
In 2006 we had four foals, one filly and three colts. Jigsaw (Morthana Rose) gave birth to a filly just as we were going to bed, it was very exciting as we watched her in the darkness she was quite happy with us near her. Later that night Starlight gave birth to a huge colt who was up and running by the time we saw him in the morning, both mares had had foals the previous year by the same stallions, Jigsaw with Sgoth and Starlight with Kestrel. We had already had a colt from Isla by Assainte, she now has three colts all a browny grey, this years was born in a field by the road and was viewed by a very surprised couple driving past! Our last foal was one that we have planned and waited eight years for! This is a colt. He is by Assainte out of our home bred mare Tarrasaigh, he is very special as she is by Kestrel and out of Lorrie(Lorna) who has had one superb colt who unfortunately was a rig and we had to have operated on and a filly who has lived all her life with Sgoth without ever getting pregnant. So you can see we have waited a long time for this foal, he has all the class that we were hoping for so we will probably keep him entire since he has all the genes that we want.
Below are a selection of some of the ponies that we have sold during the last few years. They were:-

Lochoir Cuinnag, gelding who was born in 2001. He is by Kestrel. He was a January foal and was not gelded until he was three and has a lot of come and look at me quality. His mother Morthana Rose is a very handsome mare. He is now living in Argyll.

Lochoir Foinnebheinn, filly born 2001. She is by Kestrel and out of Centaine, our leading brood mare. We only sold as we have kept her full sister as a brood mare.  She has thrilled us by winning the Eriskay class at the National Pony Society Spring show and being reserve champion in the general class. Many congratulations, she is fullfilling her potential at her first show and now goes on to the Royal Highland show in June where we will watch her progress keenly.

Lochoir Cul Mhor, filly by Scalpay born 2001. She is out of Folly Isla, a very pretty mare. She has inherited her parents' gentle nature and is happiest in a small group; she liked the one to one training when she went to the Mainland. I hope that she will be broken for driving as well as riding.

Lochoir An Tearlach's elder full sister has produced two super foals so we sold An Tearlach, quite reluctantly as she has huge potential and will be one of our tallest ponies. We have now heard that she has indeed developed into a super pony; she is only now being brought into full work.
One of our most rewarding sales was a filly who went to a farm where they use ponies (they also have a Shetland of ours)for helping children who have problems. For instance blind children find it very hard when their guide dog dies, a dog's life is very short compared with the average of thirty years of a pony. Our Eriskays and Shetlands have the perfect temperment for this work.

Although we prefer to keep the ponies until they are broken in we will occasionally sell younger stock particularly any colts since we like to geld most before they are two.
From this year we might annually sell one or two brood mares as we are now using our own breeding.

SHETLANDS
In 2005 and 2006 we sold four colts and three fillies so this year we have just three geldings for sale.
We have one broken in: Lochoir Lochran Collach, a chestnut born 1998. He is on the Mainland and has received his training. He is a friendly intelligent pony who has been broken to harness.
Lochoir Papastour is a chestnut who is ready to start work, he was born in 2002. He is a glorious red chestnut and is a very outgoing pony.
Lochoir Cuchullin is out of Birling Moppet who was bred by Lionel Hamilton-Renwick. He was born in 2003 and is very agile and small.
None of these ponies have ever suffered from stifle problems. They have scrambled up and down the rocks and through the heather from when they were born and this has given them excellent muscles and balance.
We also have two truly beautiful palomino fillies who we would be prepared to sell to a five star breeding home.
